Medusa is one of three Gorgon sisters, among the most recognized figures in Greek mythology. With snakes for hair and a gaze that turned people to stone, Medusa was once a beautiful priestess who was cursed by Athena into this terrifying form.
The hero Perseus, using a mirrored shield, winged sandals, and a helm of invisibility given by the gods, succeeded in slaying Medusa. From her severed neck, the winged horse Pegasus was born. The Medusa head (Gorgoneion), placed on Athena’s shield, was widely used as a protective talisman in the ancient world.
