About Us
Digital guardians of cultural heritage
Folkpedia was born in 2019 from the shared passion of a group of folklorists, historians, and digital archivists. We set out to gather humanity’s oldest narratives — myths, legends, folktales, and rituals — under one digital roof, from the mountain villages of Anatolia to the coastal towns of Japan, from Norse forests to West African savannas.
Every culture has its own storytelling tradition. These traditions have reached us through centuries of mouth-to-mouth, song-to-song, motif-to-motif transmission. However, in our rapidly modernizing age, this rich oral cultural heritage faces the silent threat of extinction. Folkpedia was founded with the mission of building a digital fortress against this threat.
Our project combines academic rigor with the warmth of folklore. Every entry is written by expert researchers, supported by sources, and goes through an editorial process. Our goal is not just to store information; it is to present it in an accessible, understandable, and living form.
