The Turul is the most sacred symbol of Hungarian mythology, a legendary bird of prey. Resembling a falcon or eagle, this enormous bird is considered the divine protector and ancestral totem of the Arpad dynasty.
According to legend, a noblewoman named Emese dreamed that the Turul bird descended upon her and a great river flowed from her womb. This dream heralded the birth of Arpad — the founder and first great leader of the Hungarians. The Turul remains one of Hungary’s national symbols today.
