The Morrigan is the triple goddess of war, death, and fate in Celtic mythology. Sometimes referred to as a single goddess, sometimes as the combined form of three sisters (Badb, Macha, Nemain). She flies over the battlefield in crow form, determining the outcome of war.
She proposed love to Cu Chulainn and, upon being rejected, became both his enemy and his fate. The crow that landed on Cu Chulainn’s shoulder as he died is known as Morrigan’s herald of death. Her form as an old woman washing bloody garments by a river foretells approaching death. The Morrigan is the most powerful Celtic symbol of war’s and fate’s uncontrollable nature.
