Feridun is a legendary king in Iranian mythology who represents justice and legitimate rule. Known as Thraetaona in the Avesta, Feridun was secretly raised by his mother Faranak while fleeing Zahhak’s tyranny. He is believed to have been nourished by the milk of a cow.
Joining Kawa’s revolt, he overthrew Zahhak, defeating him with his ox-headed mace and chaining him to Mount Damavand. His division of the kingdom among his three sons Iraj, Tur, and Salm forms the mythological origin of the later Iran-Turan conflicts. Feridun symbolizes just governance and the end of tyranny.
